KAMPALA – Dr Hassan Waswa Galiwango – Uganda’s High Commissioner to Kenya and Seychelles is dead. According to family sources Dr Galiwango passed on at Nairobi hospital in Kenya’s Capital where he had rushed last week after his health condition had deteriorated.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry confirmed the passing on of Dr Galiwango at Nairobi Hospital in Kenya in a statement signed by Permanent Secretary, Ambassador, Charles Ssentongo.
“He passed on this morning Jan 16th, 2023 at Nairobi Hospital where he has been undergoing treatment,” said Ssentongo in a statement.
Dr Galiwango is expected to be buried on Tuesday in Mbale, according to his younger brother Zubair Galiwango. ” We are on our way to Nairobi; burial will be tomorrow at 4:00pm,” he said.
President Museveni appointed Galiwango as the high commissioner to Kenya in October 2020.
Dr Galiwango, who has been battling heart complications was initially admitted at Mulago National Specialised Hospital.
Prior to his appointment as ambassador, Dr Galiwango served as the Director of Finance at the National Resistance Movement – NRM party Secretariat. He had earlier served as Resident District Commissioner – RDC – Mbale and Masindi as well as chairperson LCIII – Mbale Industrial Division.
Dr Galiwango is the proprietor of Mbale Progressive Secondary School, the pioneer private secondary school in city.
He was a long time chairman of Mbale Heroes FC – the only team in Uganda – outside the Buganda region to have won a Uganda Cup trophy.
He is also the husband of Mbale city Woman Member of Parliament, Connie Nakayenze Galiwango.
Condolence messages have been flowing in through various social media platforms following the death of Dr Galiwango with the 1st deputy Premier and Minister for East African Affairs – Rebecca Kadaga leading the way; “It is with great sadness that I announce the death of H.E Dr Galiwango, High Commissioner of Uganda to Kenya, which occurred this morning.”
Speaker of Parliament – Rt. Hon Annet Anita Amongo also joined Ugandans in consoling with the bereaved family through twitter.
“My Sincere condolences to you my sister Hon Connie Galiwango and the family upon the demise of Ambassador Dr Hassan Galiwango. We shall always remember his dedicated service to his country ,Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un,” she noted.
“Dr Hassan Wasswa Galiwango thank you for educating me. Thank you for being a father. Thank you for impacting on the lives of many. Thank you for being one of the greatest teachers of African history. Rest well our giant,” noted Chris Obore – the Director of Communications at Parliament.
