KAMPALA – National Unity Platform – NUP party legal department head, Anthony Wameli who has been hospitalised since 2021 is died.
NUP party president, Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine announced Wameli’s death on Wednesday.
“Very sad day! Just learnt of the untimely passing of our dear brother and Head of our Legal Team, comrade Wameli Anthony from the U.S. where he’s been admitted for treatment.
“Details will be provided in due course. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” tweeted Kyagulanyi.
Wameli was in 2021 admitted to St. Anthony medical centre in Kasangati, Wakiso district due to stomach related complications.
His wife, Olive Wameli said then that the lawyer was unable to talk.
The lawyer was a few weeks later in June 2021 flown out of the country to the US for further treatment and it is where he has been until his death.
Wameli was diagnosed with stage four cancer – complaining of abdominal complications in the past few months before he was flown and admitted at Boston Medical Centre in Massachusetts in the United State in September 2021.
Stage four colon cancer occurs when the disease has spread to other tissue and organs such as the liver. It may also reach the lungs, the lymph nodes, or the lining of the abdominal cavity.
In 2021 – the Uganda Law Society-ULS named Wameli as the criminal defence lawyer of the year. The ULS Annual General Meeting then – also voted Wameli and Company Advocates, which employs eight Advocates as the law firm of the year.
Wameli, a Pastor at Ebenezer Christian Fellowship in Kanyanya rose to the limelight in 2017 when he represented the suspects accused of murdering former Police Spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi, his bodyguard Kenneth Erau and driver, Godfrey Mambewa.
He has also been the legal representative of Jamil Mukulu – the alleged head of the rebel Allied Democratic Forces-ADF and former presidential candidates retired Lt General Henry Tumukunde and Robert Kyagulanyi.
