KAMPALA – Ndejje University went into the 2022 edition of the East African University Games’ competition as defending champions from the last version in Dodoma – and indeed defended their crown.

The Luweero based institution, which played that role of hosts, collected a total of 124 medals to finish on top of the 12th edition that claimaxed on December 21.

Makerere University and its former subsidiary – Mubs came second and third respectively with 68 and 40 medals.

Ndejje picked gold in 10 different sporting disciplines including basketball, woodball, karate, handball, badminton, swimming, taekwondo, darts and athletics.

Makerere University dominated chess as well as badminton and woodball while Mubs were good in swimming, woodball, athletics and table tennis.

Kenyatta University were 4th overall after collecting a total of 63 medals as Maseno managed a total of five gold to finish fifth.

Other Kenya’s representatives including, Strathmore, Kemu and Kisii also travelled back home with medals.

On the final day, Uganda’s Busitema had scooped gold in scrabble as Kampala University emerged netball queens after overcoming Victoria University 68-51.

Bugema University picked gold medals for beating Islamic University In Uganda 1-0 in the men’s football final, while Uganda Christian University joined the podium for overcoming Kampala University 1-0 in the girls’ football.

The annual Games 2022 ended on Wednesday with a traditional closing ceremony at Ndejje University after attracting 38 Universities from across East Africa region, in addition to one guest team from Ethiopia.
